In the book, the author, Good Buffalo Eagle, tells us that, “life is a walking, a journey,” and that “there are two ways to walk” as we take this journey. He explains that “[w]e can choose to walk forward or we can choose to walk backward” (Foreword).
“Forward walking choices are rewarded with consequences that light the way to peace, happiness, joy, comfort, knowledge, and wisdom. Backward Walking choices bring to the Two-Legged beings consequences of misery, despair, and darkness” (xi).
“The success of our journey in the wilderness of the world depends on whether our hearts walk forward—towards people—instead of backward, away from them” (10).
We invite you to look at your own life and think about how it may be considered “a walking”. Our lives are full of twists and turns, mountains and valleys, large open fields, small, dark caves, low canyons and high mountains. In traversing these terrains, we begin to see that life is truly a journey—a walking.
Naturally, we will make mistakes, feel lost, and experience setbacks as we try to find our way home. In these moments, we must remember that this life our lives are a walking. Standing still or even walking backward will not solve our problems. The quickest way to the fulfillment of our dreams is to right ourselves, and keep moving forward.
